Phil Beer and Amelie Rose – Folkboat

About Amelie Rose
Amelie Rose will be familiar to members as the very pretty large traditional boat out on the moorings. Most will be aware that she is used throughout the summer to provide active traditional sailing holidays for paying guests. She was launched in 2009 and been in continuous use since. She is famous for being the star of ITVs “Hungry Sailors” sailing and cooking show and is in 2015 officially the fastest Pilot Cutter in the world having just returned triumphant from the annual “world” championships in Cornwall.

About Phil Beer
Phil Beer is one of England’s foremost fiddle players and traditional musicians. He is a multi instrumentalist however and is equally skilled with guitar, mandolin and even ukulele. Undoubtedly best known for his performances with the group “Show of Hands”, Phil tours extensively with many other groups and as a solo performer. He has a wide repertoire including traditional folk music, blues and jazz and all sorts of acoustic music.
He is an enthusiastic sailor and a gifted teacher. Phil likes to bring out the best in other musicians around him and a warm and easy person to be around.

Phil Beer and Amelie Rose – Folkboat

Some years ago Phil and Amelie Rose Skipper, Diggory Rose (no relation) realised that a traditional boat would make a great venue for like-minded musical people to get together and make music and so the Folkboat project was born.

This year, Folkboat is being held on board Amelie Rose over a number of weeks in the summer. Sunday 31st May and the following Sunday, 7th June, are the start dates for the next two trips with additional dates later in the year.

The idea is for the guests to meet prior to joining the boat, in the Lakeyard Bar, have something to eat and then set out to embark on the boat. In exchange for this, the guests and Phil himself will lead a session or perform in the bar to create a great ambiance.

By definition, a session will go in any number of different directions and the music played will vary according to the tastes and instruments of the participants but it is always very inclusive and often promotes others to join in.

It will be by no means exclusively folk music and there are bound to be other influences but it will be acoustic and open to all comers.

Any musical members are encouraged to come on down and join in, it is not exclusively for those sailing on Amelie Rose! So put the word about and get down to the bar. The guests join us at 1800 and we’ll aim to get things going as soon as the momentum gathers.

We are looking forward to seeing you
